DEEP PURPLE MK4

NEW ZEALAND   November 1975

Kia ora The New Zealand & Australian leg of Deep Purple Mk4's 1975/76 World Tour is considered to be a rare positive in what was generally considered a not so ‘Purple Patch’ in the band's history. New Zealand came after the opening show in Hawaii, so the band were still slightly raw around the edges, but, in my mind, that looseness suited this incarnation – it sounded like a band enjoying themselves. Tommy, Jon and Glenn have all said that the NZ/Australian shows were enjoyable, great weather and fun times. The 2 videos below were done purely as a fun exercise. Part 1 used extracts from the ‘Baptism of Fire’ bootleg from the Auckland gig, and after that I was kindly sent the ‘Taste it in Auckland’ bootleg which featured the complete show, from which I used extracts for Part 2. I wanted to catch a brief glimpse of the ‘vibe’ from that night, a band that seemed relatively happy and having fun (a far cry from a few months later). As much as I LOVE Mk4, Bolin and ‘CTTB’ is one of my all time favourite albums, I never particulary liked Mk4 live for so many reasons, but this is one of the better gigs (IN MY HUMBLE OINION). In saying that, Tommy’s solo (Part 1) was (Again, IN MY OPINION) AWFUL – a far cry of his capabilities... ONLY THEN to be immediately followed by a blistering performance on ‘Stormbringer (Part 2). This kind of sums up MY impression of the live Mk4, so much talent and promise and yet so up and down... Anyway, enjoy a bit of PURPLE KIWIANA... Oh... If ANYONE has any recordings/photos/information from the Christchurch gig... PLEASE CONTACT US Kia kaha

The two bootlegs from which the AUDIO is taken from. The VIDEO is all from a TVNZ brief news piece that was run on New Zealand TV in Nov, 1975. The limited live footage was from that clip, but unfortunately it was accompanied by a audio snippet of the  ‘MIJ’ version of ‘Smoke on the Water’. Most of the still shots are  generic and NOT from the gig itself.
